Why solar in California 2026.
California utility rates have climbed 8–12% per year for most of the last decade, and the trend has not slowed. For a typical PG&E or SCE customer, that adds $400–$800 a year without changing a single appliance.
NEM 3.0 changed the math in 2023. Solar without storage now takes 9–12 years to pay back. A battery stores your mid-day production and uses it during peak evening rates, so you keep the difference.
The 30% federal credit ended for cash and loan installs at the end of 2025, but TPO leases retain it through 2032 under Section 48E. The lessor captures it; you see it as a lower monthly payment.

Sizing the system.
Under NEM 3.0, an oversized system exports power for pennies. An undersized one leaves you paying the utility. We size to your actual usage with a little room to grow.

Oversizing wastes money under NEM 3.0
Excess export earns ~$0.05/kWh. Sizing to your actual use beats producing for the utility.

Battery storage under NEM 3.0.
Under NEM 3.0, exporting to the grid earns about $0.05/kWh while buying back during peak evening hours costs several times that. A battery lets you store your own mid-day production and use it at 6pm instead of selling it for pennies.
